Reference in Cryptonomicon
[edit]The real submarine is referenced in the novel as well, much earlier, by name, and factually, as one of the sources of information on the Enigma machine. The reference of the fictitious U-boat U-559 to U-553 is obvious, though, given the similarity of their numbers and roles (also, both 553 and 559 are the products of two primes: 553 = 7 * 79 and 559 = 13 * 43--the latter is mentioned, and products of two primes is a running theme in the novel). I'll leave looking up the details and editing the actual article to someone else.
